NAS To Take Great Strides In The Leap Year

A new year is almost upon us, and we’re proud to announce an exciting array of programs and services for 2008. Building upon the success of our current leadership programs, these new offerings are the direct result of the feedback we have heard from you and your colleagues. Our 2008 programs will allow arts and culture leaders to more easily access leadership and educational services. They will help you further integrate and apply new concepts within your organization. And, they will help you build a sustained learning relationship with organizations throughout the field.

Business of Arts and Culture™

Our national seminar series, the Business of Arts and Culture, will continue with presentations throughout 2008. This nationwide program helps arts and culture leaders find new solutions, working with your team and top business school faculty to apply insightful approaches to your organization. The seminars create a retreat-like atmosphere where organizational teams work together on key challenges such as strategy, marketing and finance. Starting in 2008, we will introduce online follow-up sessions that will further help you apply the frameworks introduced in the classroom.

The full schedule of 2008 seminars is now available online. There is only one scheduled national presentation for each seminar topic this year. Sign up now before space runs out!

Expanding the Horizon with American Express: Future Leadership™

The Business of Arts and Culture helps today’s leadership tackle key issues facing their organizations. This new NAS initiative will expand our focus to tomorrow’s top leadership. With exclusive funding from the American Express Foundation, this program is designed specifically for those who will fill the top positions of the nation’s leading arts organizations over the next five to seven years. Working with NAS, these leaders will have the unique opportunity to design their own professional development using our online community Web site.

The first phase of the program will be the launch of an online community discussion area. This international community of arts professionals will work with NAS to identify key concerns and interests, and to design a professional development event specifically to meet their needs. The inaugural education event in this program will be held in summer 2008.

Building a Learning Community Online

Based on your feedback, we are extending the NAS experience beyond the classroom. Our new online learning community will bring arts and culture executives, staff, boards, and funders together “7 x 24”, giving leaders immediate access to new ideas, discussions, and experiences when you need them. The community will include a management and leadership wiki, discussion boards, and blogs that will allow arts and culture leaders to explore management frameworks, contribute their own expertise and get help applying new concepts. It will be a powerful tool for leading your organization, and for you to help lead the broader arts community too.

The arts and culture sector will have an online learning community starting this February. Two of the unique features will be:

An Online Home for Your Expertise

New ideas take off when powerful concepts and real experience intersect. With the launch of our new leadership wiki (an online, collaboratively-authored encyclopedia, like Wikipedia) we will give voice to the expertise of individuals from throughout the arts and culture sector. The wiki will be a living, growing online source of leadership and management methods. With topics like audience development, fundraising, and financial management, the site will offer practical, proven methods for cultural organizations – built on the collective expertise of our field through ongoing edits and contributions.

An Open Dialogue with NAS

We’re driven by what our participants have to say… and now we’re making it easier for you to talk with us. Starting in February, alumni will be able to share their experiences and drive improvements in NAS programs. This new online discussion will also allow you to continue discussions from an NAS seminar with your colleagues and with NAS. This online commons will help arts and culture organizations work together as a field to create the leadership and education resources you need to support your vision and your organization.

Thanks to a National Network of Visionary Funders

The national network of private and corporate foundations investing in arts and cultural leaders keeps growing. A new partnership with the American Express Foundation provides the exclusive funding for our programming for tomorrow's top leaders. Additional investment by The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation will allow NAS to introduce the online learning community in 2008. We are also very excited to have the continued support for the 2008 Business of Arts and Culture program from the Fidelity Foundation, The Paul G. Allen Family Foundation, The Joyce Foundation, The Virginia G. Piper Charitable Trust, The Community Foundation for Greater Atlanta, Fulton County Arts Council, Metropolitan Atlanta Arts Fund, The Chicago Community Trust, and 4Culture.

We’re excited about these new initiatives for 2008. But these are only the next steps in an ongoing conversation with our community. There are more changes to come. Add your voice to the discussion.
